Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System
There are approximately 132,000 students enrolled making the CMS (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools) school system the second largest school district in North Carolina and the 20th largest in the nation.
A brief history:
The Charlotte/Mecklenburg School system is best known for being the first county to begin busing students in 1971 as a result of the Supreme Court decision in the Swann vs. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools court case. It has also been one of the last counties in the country to stop busing students about 6 years ago. Once busing stopped, the school board implemented “school of choice” which they quickly realized would not work. Their idea was that everyone could pick the school they wanted to attend. As you would expect this resulted in some schools unable to accommodate the flood of new students and other schools left empty. Then the school board (in their infinite wisdom) decided to assign primary schools and allow reassignment only if the school had room. Over the next few years the school board tried new ways to relieve overcrowding at some schools and the lack of students in others. They worked on the school district lines, drawing and redrawing school assignments. The result of all this was that in some neighborhoods children were moved from school to school. Many families got frustrated and moved out of Mecklenburg county into the surrounding counties. Currently reassignments have slowed down.
The latest controversy is the division of the IB program at Myers Park High School, one of the most prominent schools in the CMS system. I’ve included a link so you can read more about this. Myers Park Controversy
